COPD and asthma

Are copd and asthma coded separately? OR if the patient has both, is it coded under -J44? The notes under J44 say it includes copd with asthma and to include the type of asthma IF applicable. So it seems to me like if you have a chart with copd and unspecified asthma documented, that you would only code J449 unless the type of asthma is specified?
