Inpatient Consultations

I have a physician that thinks he can charge an admit code whenever he is asked for a consult; regardless of whether the patient was admitted same day or several days previous. Is that correct?

Inpatient consultations

Yes for Medicare. Consult codes no longer are payable, he has to charge a 99221-99223. Cigna also does not accept the consult codes.

inpatient consult

I know all the rules with Medicare, I am looking for a website or some literature because one of my surgeons is trying to grasp all of this and I think if I had something in writing, it would be much easier for him to understand. His main complaint is a physician assistant who will see patients in the ER or on the floor first and she will dictate an H & P and he will go and see the patient later, but his dictations are not as thorough as hers so I am having a hard time justifying a 99221 admit code for inpatient consults on Medicare patients.
