office visit rectal pain / colonoscopy

I have a patient that was referred to us for rectal pain and a screening colonoscopy. My docotor examined the patient for rectal pain and prescribed medication for it. He also scheduled a screening colonoscopy. Can I bill for an office visit since we prescribed meds?

I think that since the patient was referred for rectal pain, you can bill the E/M.

Is the colonoscopy really screening, or is it diagnostic, based on the patient's symptoms? Are they unrelated?

If you later bill a screening colonoscopy, the payer may take back the E/M money, and you will have to appeal, showing that they were unrelated.

Looking through records it looks as if my doctor saw him for a rectal abcess along with ordering a screening colonoscopy. The two are unrelated.
