NP/PA Billing

SA modifier should be used when coding services performed by a nurse practitioner. Is there a modifier for a PA? I have not been able to locate one.

AS modifier

Medicare uses modifier AS to report nonphysician assistant-at-surgery services. When an NPP assists a surgeon, Medicare requires that the claim be submitted under the NPP’s name with his or her provider number (National Provider Identifier or NPI) and with modifier AS appended to the reported surgical code(s). Use of modifier AS to report assistant-at-surgery services by NPPs is a national Medicare policy. Applies to PA, NP, or CNS who is an assistant at surgery. otherwise the NPP bills in own name and number or as "incident to" service.
SA not covered for Medicare.

SA Modifier

Thanks for the response. I am aware of the guidelines for Medicare, but was questioning the usage of a modifier for office visits for PAs when the insurance company does not credential them, but does allows them to be billed under the physicians NPI/Name.
