Hospital readmission

A patient was charged an initial hospital visit on October 22 was discharged on October 25 then readmitted to the hospital on Oct 27th with the same diagnosis. Can the doctor charge for an initial hospital visit again?

re: Hospital readmission

The hospital will have a problem with early discharge and DRG payment. Physician payment will depend on payer because billing an initial encounter for basically same episode of care.

Yes, the physician should charge an initial hospital visit. That is correct coding.

It is very possible that both hospital and attending physician will be asked to submit records for review of premature discharge. This is an area that is being monitored closely.
