Billing Medicaid secondary to Medicare Part A only
We are having a problem with professional claims being billed to Medicaid that the patient only has Medicare Part A. Medicaid denies stating Medicare eligible. We have tried submitting thru champs with a comment, and using CAS codes. Anyone know how to get around this issue?
re: Billing Medicaid secondary to Medicare Part A only
Medicaid does not always have the most up to date records, or they may know the patient has part A only, but their system will not allow a claim to pass edits without some proof that Medicare will not pay. I think you will need to bill Medicare for the denial & then submit to Medicaid. It has worked for me a number of times. Likely, the attempts to appeal will only delay your efforts to get paid.Frequently, it is a matter of supplying information to move around the system processing edits.

Thank you for your input. Unfortunately, we have already tried doing that and are still receiving a denial.
re: Billing Medicaid secondary to Medicare Part A only
Medicaid may have received information that the patient has Part A & Part B. If you have verified with Medicare that they have Part A only on the date of service (by contacting Medicare, not just going by a card) the patient may need to contact Medicaid to update thier information. If you do not have the ability to access Medicare eligibility, your hospital does and sometimes a contact there can check it for you.
