Icd-10

Do the new ICD-10 changes affect independent providers? I thought I saw on one of the presentations that the new codes are for inpaient and outpatient coding (hospital), but that ICD-9 codes will still be valid for sole providers. For example, will an independent Internal Medicine doctor need to update their coding to the new ICD-10 codes by October 2013?

Thanks

re: ICD-10

On October 1, 2013 any provider (hospital, facilities, physicians, etc) who currently use ICD-9 for diagnosis must code ICD-10 for dates of service October 1, 2013 and after. If the date of service is before October 1, 2013, use ICD-9 codes. EVERYONE!
Yes, an IM doctor is included.

Perhaps you were thinking of the reference that said that providers in their office settings would continue to use CPT® codes rather than the ICD-10 procedure codes used in hospital settings.

Yes I am refrerring to that. In an office setting do the provider shave to use the new ICD-10 codes or can they continue to use the ICD-9 codes?

Thanks,
Lisa

re: ICD-10

In the office they will use the ICD-10 for diagnosis codes and continue to use CPT® codes for procedures.
