Mike has surgery to excise a lesion found at his skull base. The surgeon performs both the approach procedure and the definitive procedure, along with a straightforward repair of the skull. What would need to be taken into consideration to code this procedure correctly?

CPT® contains codes to describe each portion of the operation – approach, definitive procedure and secondary closure/repair. The approach and definitive procedure code must match (area). This is complex coding and each operative note must be dissected to see what one surgeon performed or co-surgeons performed.
