New Codes for Pediatric COVID Vaccinations

On October 6, 2021, the AMA released three new codes to track COVID-19 vaccinations in the pediatric population. As FDA approval for children under 12 approaches, the need to track vaccinations for this population is needed. The AMA stated:
“Codes 91307, 0071A, and 0072A are used to report Pfizer COVID-19 vaccine and immunization administration for the tris-sucrose pediatric (i.e., 5 through 11 years of age) dosage formulation. These codes were published on Oct. 6, 2021 and will be effective upon receiving Emergency Use Authorization or approval from the Food and Drug Administration.”
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has released guidance regarding the logistics of vaccine distribution over the coming weeks and months. Based on the planned meeting of the committee responsible for Emergency Use Authorization (EUA) of the vaccine in the pediatric population ages 5-11, the CDC assumes that, if EUA is granted, vaccine administration in this population will begin in the days following this October 26th meeting.
COVID-19 Vaccination Codes Change Frequently
With the ever-evolving Public Health Emergency, the need for new codes has come at a pace that exceeds the typical release schedule for CPT codes. In case you missed it, new vaccine codes were also released in August and September. The AMA has a vaccine page that you can access for basic information on these codes; however, please note that the NDC number listed on that page (at the time this article was published) for 91307 should be 59267-0078-1.
