Our claims to BCBS for nutritional counseling using "97802, 97803" are denying for this reason,"the procedure code is inconsistent with the provider type/specialty (Taxonomy)."
The taxonomy for rendering provider is "133N00000X".
The patient has nutrition coverage, but can't get any other answer accept the denial reason. We can't seem to figure it out. Help!

re: RDN

You can't bill 97802 and 97803 together. Read the CPT® book. 97802 is the initial treatment and each unit is for 15 minutes of face to face time. 97803 is a re-assessment code, meaning the patient would come back in 30-90 days to reassess them. The taxonomy is correct, but just in case check the NPI website to make sure it's correct and check BCBS to make sure they have it their system correctly.. You never know!

Hope this works out for you!

re: RDN

I'm sorry, no, we are not billing both procdures same date. Yes, they have the correct NPI. We were just told, per members policy, Nutritional counseling can only be performed by MD (?) Thank you.
