Wouldn't Meningitis be the primary diagnosis? That is the primary illness. From a DRG viewpoint you want the cause of the hospitalization not the etiology of the illness

Aids

Patients who are admitted for an HIV-related illness should be assigned a minimum of two codes: first assign code 042 to identify the HIV disease and then sequence additional codes to identify the other diagnoses. If a patient is admitted for an HIV-related condition, the principal diagnosis should be 042, followed by additional diagnosis codes for all reported HIV related conditions. Noted in "Coding Clinic as well.

Aseptic Meningitis due to HIV

Thank you for all the help. These are the codes that I looked up also. I am very new to this just wanted to double check myself and make sure that putting code for AIDS first was exactly right. I am in school right now for ICP-9-CM and I am learning so much. Thanks again.
