How acute bronchitis and asthma are coded?

if acute bronchits and asthma are documented should both asthma and acute bronchitis i.e. 466.0 and 493.90 be coded separetely or only asthmatic bronchitis 493.90 is coded

Thanks,

re: How acute bronchitis and asthma are coded?

If it is a patient with chronic asthma who then gets bronchitis, bill both. If a well person gets bronchitis with wheezing, then it's the single code

I believe it should be coded 466.0 and 493.90.

I think Coding Clinic, Q4 2002 addressed this.

Both conditions present usually coded to 493.xx, depending on whether documentation whether chronic, extrinsic, intrinsic.
