E/M with urine test

When a patient visits the physician's office solely to provide a urine sample, is it appropriate to charge 99211 for the nurse to run the dip stick through the machine for the AC ratio?

Thank you.

urine

Is this a Medicare patient? Is it "incident-to" a physician service? Was the dip abnormal and was the physician consulted?

urine test e/m

Yes, the patient has Medicare. There is an order in the medical record for the patient to come to the office but only to have the urine test. The physician was not consulted and the urine test results were normal. The nurse ran the dip stick through the processor and the physican's office is charging 99211 for the nurse's involvement with the test.

I would not bill 99211

totally agree!

No reason for a nurse visit - big red flag to get audited! Same with blood tests.
