Why You Should Be Looking Up Medical Codes Online

Medical coders, billers, and auditors all rely on accurate codes to do their jobs. Unfortunately, none of them can get by with just one set of codes. There are multiple sets encompassing tens of thousands of codes covering just about everything in healthcare. That means constantly looking up codes – even among those with excellent memories. The important question is this: where are codes being looked up?

If you work in any of the three professions listed above, where do you look up your codes? If you are still using printed books and other types of legacy materials, we want to encourage you to consider online lookup instead. An online platform like Find-A-Code could transform the way you do your job.

Here's why we think you should be looking up medical codes online:

1. It is Faster and Efficient

Thumbing through books in search of elusive medical codes worked well enough when it was the only way to do so. But it is not the only way anymore. In addition, books are not even the most efficient method for looking up medical codes. Looking codes up online is exponentially more efficient. It is faster, too!

It takes mere seconds to type in a few keywords and hit the 'Enter' key. A few seconds later, the results appear on your screen. In the time it takes you to look up a single code in a book, you could look up multiple codes online.

2. Everything in One Location

Looking up medical codes online means having all your resources in one location. As long as you have your computer and access to the internet, you can look up codes. There is no need to put work on hold because you do not have access to your books. Of course, this particular benefit of lookup requires that your chosen platform offers all the code sets you need. Find-A-Code does.

3. Codes Are Up to Date

If the online platform you choose is operated by providers who are doing their job, you never have to worry about outdated information. As codes are updated by their publishers, platform operators should be updating their information. There could be a slight lag here and there but looking up codes online almost always guarantees working with up-to-date information.

4. You Spend Less

Over the course of many years working as a medical coder, biller, or auditor, you are likely to spend a lot less on a software subscription compared to all the books you would need to do your job. When you work with books, you are constantly buying new editions to account for updates. But with online platforms like ours, we do the updating work behind the scenes. You do not pay extra for it.

5. Multiple Look Up Options

The most efficient online platforms give subscribers multiple options for looking up codes. Here at Find-A-Code, choose indexed search, tabular lookup, code crosswalks, and other options. We give you more than one way to find the needed information because we know that one size doesn't fit all.

In addition to the multiple options, we give you access to a variety of resources that will help you be better at what you do. We offer an information-packed library along with comprehensive guides, dictionaries, and even a regular newsletter to keep you in the know. You don't get any of these additional benefits with code books.

The old books served their purpose well, but their day has long since passed. If you are not looking medical codes up online, you're missing out on something that could revolutionize your work.

Specialization: Your Advantage as a Medical Coding Contractor
December 22nd, 2023 - Find-A-Code
Medical coding contractors offer a valuable service to healthcare providers who would rather outsource coding and billing rather than handling things in-house. Some contractors are better than others, but there is one thing they all have in common: the need to present some sort of value proposition in order to land new clients. As a contractor, your value proposition is the advantage you offer. And that advantage is specialization.

Medicare Guidance Changes for E/M Services
October 11th, 2023 - Wyn Staheli
2023 brought quite a few changes to Evaluation and management (E/M) services. The significant revisions as noted in the CPT codebook were welcome changes to bring other E/M services more in line with the changes that took place with Office or Other Outpatient Services a few years ago. As part of CMS’ Medicare Learning Network, the “Evaluation and Management Services Guide” publication was finally updated as of August 2023 to include the changes that took place in 2023.
