wart removal

I have a Dr. that has removed 30 warts from patients foot. What is the best way to bill this service?

poor patient!!!

If the physician destroys fifteen or more warts (or molluscum), then use code 17111. Even if the physician destroys thirty-five warts, it is appropriate to only use the code 17111 a single time.

wart removal, 15 or more

Signature doc is correct, as always.

The thing to remember is that CPT is literal. If you read the CPT definition of 17110 it is: 15 or more. That means 15 to infinity on one day is one unit.

wart removal

I understand that but why can't 17000 be billed for the first wart and 17003 for second thru 17 lesions each?

lesion destruction

17000 represents destruction of the first lesion; code 17003 represents lesions 2 through 14, each, meaning that the "add-on" code 17003 would be reported multiple times if additional lesions (up to 14) are destroyed. However, code 17004 represents destruction of 15 or more lesions and is a stand-alone code that can be reported alone. If 15 or more lesions are destroyed, this code (17004) should be reported alone. read the notes under these codes in CPT manual.

wart versus AK

17000 is for a premalignant lesion, NOT WARTS.

17110 is for warts.

I can't remember what year: 2008 or 2009. The CPT book specifically said that a physician should use 17110 for warts. not 17000. It's not how the lesion is destroyed, it is the nature of the lesion that determines what series of codes to use.
