charging for 99217 day after a procedure

What are the rules for charging a IP/Observation discharge on the day after a procedure was done.

We are getting a denial saying you can't do this.

Is your place of service correct. 99217 is an outpatient discharge code. Did the patient stay less than 24 hours?

yes pt was OP Observation. Claim denied saying the discharge code should be
included in global for the surgery.

If surgery has post op days this would be true. If minor with 0 post op days I disagree. I am assuming your doc was the admitting doc.

I'll add another potential twist. If the patient had a scheduled outpatient procedure and was kept overnight for "observation" then that is not a real Observation visit. That is an outpatient in a bed and the patient is not discharged from observation, even by the non-surgeon, they are just ending their post-op recovery.
