diagnosis

We are a pediatric clinic. Sometimes parents wish to come in for a visit simply to meet our providers, there isn't any illness. We dont' believe there is a diagnosis code for this type of visit, nor would an insurance company pay, but we would like to get feedback from other clinics and their experience. Thank you.

Not charged

My partner does this

She charges $40 for the visit and if they establish then the money gets credited to their account to cover copays, deductibles, etc.

no code

“Get-Acquainted” Visits: There is no CPT code for a “get-acquainted” visit with a new patient. These services would not be considered medically necessary or preventive and should not be billed to insurance. Unless your policy is to provide these visits at no charge, patients should be informed when they call to schedule this type of visit that insurance will not cover it and that payment will be expected at the time of the service.
This could be a PR nightmare if you charge the patient.

Thank you so much for your replies. It is nice to know others have the same situations.

I will sometimes charge for a prenatal visit when parents come in with questions. There is a CPT code for this I believe.

I usually don't charge if parents are "shopping" for a pediatrician. I have 1 or 2 a year. If I had 2 each day, I would have to rethink this, especially if they don't establish with my practice.
