office visit & hospital admit /same day

If a patient is seen in the office & later the same physician admits them to the hospital can you bill for both visits?

office/Hospital

If on same day and related condition, you can only bill the initial hospital encounter.

office visit & hospital admit/same day

There are separate dx for both visits. Is there a modifier that needs to be added?

The wise physician would

bill a high level office visit on the first day and document a complete office note and then perform, document and bill the H&P on the next day. There is no modifier that will get both paid on one day.

office and hospital visit same day.

What if I saw the patient in the office for abdominal pain, sent the patient to the ER; then patient got admitted to the hospital by the primary doc, and I got consulted for abdominal pain...and I saw patient on 1)same day or 2) next day. If I saw the patient in consultation on the same day as the office visit, could I bill both? What if I saw them in consultation the following day?

office visit and consult, same day

Only one E/M service in a day.

Either bill the office visit or the consult. You can select based on the level of history, exan and MDM you performed in that locale.

If monday in the office and Tuesday at the hospital, don't bill two high level services. That would raise a question: were both high level visits medically necessary.
