Hospice Patient

A patient who is covered by hospice called our office on his own and made an appointment. At the time, we were not aware that the patient was enrolled in a hospice program. The hospice program will not pay because they did not ask for the service to be rendered, but we cannot bill Medicare because the problem is related to the hospice diagnosis. Do we have any recourse???

Of course

if you are the patient's primary care doc, you can bill with GV modifier and get paid. If you ar the oncologist and are signng the hospice paperwork, you can also use GV. If you are the oncologist and the patient has a primary and his hospice diagnosis is cancer, you are out of luck.
